The Collector ****

When I heard about The Collector I was originally intrigued but also apprehensive about the plot. On the one hand, it ran the risk of falling into the typical slasher flick that we’ve all seen a hundred times already. On the other hand however, it could have been a unique, creative and thoroughly enjoyable horror movie. Thankfully, The Collector turned out to be the latter. The plot consisted of Saw-like traps, Hostel-style torture and a bunch of victims thrown in.
The plot follows a would-be thief who breaks into a house intent on raiding a bedroom safe. Suddenly out of nowhere there’s a masked serial killer running about and a family being tortured while the thief tries to escape (much harder than it sounds) He finds booby traps in every room that would put a demented Macaulay Culkin to shame and a series of bloody finds along the way.
Overall I would give this film 4 stars. It’s a great plot, filled to the brim with blood and gore, a bit of sex and a seemingly unstoppable serial killer. The only thing that kept it from getting 5/5 was its realism. I can’t really believe that the collector was able to assemble so many traps in such a small timescale. There’s also the issue of the implausible nature of the contraptions. Apart from that, really good film. Definitely has the potential for a sequel so keep an eye out, it should hit your screens in 2012
